Lt. Robert “Bobby” Glaser suffered moderate injuries in the wreck that killed the dog named Philos about 1:30 a.m., said Sgt. Don Kelly, a Baton Rouge police spokesman.
Jesse Isiah Farris, 22, of Baton Rouge, was booked with first-degree vehicular negligent injury, driving after his license had been suspended, drunk and reckless driving, and driving the wrong way on a one-way street, Kelly said.
Farris was in jail and bond had not been set.
It was Glaser’s second injury in the line of duty this year. He was shot in February and returned to work in late June, Kelly said.
Kelly said Philos was the first Baton Rouge police dog to die in the line of duty since 1988, when a dog named Brute was bitten by a brown recluse spider while tracking a robbery suspect. In 1985, the dog Max was shot and killed while chasing a car thief, Kelly said.
