Original Article: Assumption, Ursuline, Northlake, Country Day claim state titles

It was a battle of dynasties in both the Division One and Division Two classes at the state volleyball championships at the Pontchartrain Center in Kenner. In the end, the most recent dynasty prevailed in Division One while the old guard was served in Division Two.

Top-seeded St. Joseph’s claimed its third consecutive state Division One title, fighting off second-seeded Mount Carmel in three close games, 28-26, 25-23, 25-21 to finish off a tremendous 46-1 season. It was the seventh state title of the decade for the Red Stickers. The last team other than St. Joseph’s to win a state crown in Division One was Mount Carmel in 2006.

In Division Two, Cabrini was in search of a third consecutive state title but fell victim to a traditional power which has rediscovered its storied past. Assumption rallied after losing the opening game to take down the Crescents 15-25, 25-21, 25-18, 26-24 for the championship.

The title was the eighth in the rich history for the Mustangs and snapped Cabrini’s stranglehold on the class. It is the first championship since 2000 for Assumption.

In Division Three, an emotionally inspired Ursuline squad would not be denied. Dedicating their title match to late coach Marta Bott, the Lions downed top-seeded Notre Dame 25-23, 25-21, 24-26, 27-25 to capture the state championship.

First-year coach Jay Jay Juan, who captured three state titles as the head coach at Mount Carmel, took over the reins for Bott and propelled his team to a tremendous accomplishment. With the win, Ursuline completed a 33-8 season. Notre Dame, which reached the semifinals in 2008 and won the state title in 2007, fell just short of their goal.

In Division Four, Northlake Christian endured a coaching change, star players leaving and moving up in class to claim a third state title in a row, downing top-seeded McGehee 25-20, 25-22, 23-25, 25-18 to capture the championship for first-year coach Rowland Skinner, who doubles as Northlake’s baseball coach. Northlake had won state titles in 2007 and 2008 in Division Five.

McGehee fell short in its quest for a second consecutive Division Two championship. With the victory, the Wolverines finished the season 30-10.

In Division Five, Country Day claimed its first state volleyball title since 1975, downing top-seeded Episcopal of Acadiana 25-21, 25-21, 26-24 in the championship match for coach Julie Ibieta, the former head volleyball coach at UNO and a former star player at LSU.

The win capped a 30-10 season for the Cajuns while Episcopal fell short in the final for the third consecutive year, finishing 30-12.
